Mazda has begun commercial leasing in Japan of a dual-fuel hydrogen/gasoline hybrid. The Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid is a series hybrid. A rotary engine spins a generator, providing electric power to drive the electric traction motor which turns the wheels. The generator also recharges the battery pack. The rotary engine, operating on either hydrogen or gasoline, produces 110 kilowatts or 147 horsepower.
The hydrogen fuel range of the Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid is 200 kilometers/124 miles. The car has twice the range of Mazda’s previous hydrogen car, the RX-8 Hydrogen RE. Mazda’s new dual-fuel system enables the car to run on gasoline if hydrogen is unavailable.
The Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid is currently only available in Japan. The first units have been sold to local government authorities and energy-related companies.
